On my way home from work, I stopped by Dongnimmun Gate and walked a little. There was a small entrance to the left of Dongnimmun Gate. I also saw the statue of Seo Jae-pil.

Seoul Dongnimmun Gate To celebrate the March 1st Independence Movement Day, I visited Dongnimmun Gate located in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Even in cloudy weather, many citizens visited this place to reflect on the meaning of the independence movement. A variety of people, from family visitors to children wearing traditional costumes, lined up to take commemorative photos, seemingly taking the meaning of March 1st to heart. Dongnimmun is a stone gate built in 1897 to commemorate the independence of the Korean Empire after demolishing Yeongeunmun, which originally welcomed Chinese envoys. It was designed after the French Arc de Triomphe, and is currently located in Independence Park. The Korean flag is engraved on both sides of the door, so you can naturally feel national pride when you visit this place. On this day, citizens could be seen holding the Taegeukgi in their hands around Dongnimmun Gate to commemorate the sacrifices of independence activists.

Dongnimmun was built by the Independence Association through a fundraising campaign targeting citizens across the country to declare our country's permanent independence. It's a place that touches my heart every time I go. Please visit with your children.

While walking down Ansan Jarak-gil, I came across Dongnimmun Gate, which is under construction. You can see the statue of martyr Yu Gwan-sun and Dr. Seo Jae-pil at the same time as Seodaemun Prison. The overpass in front of Dongnimmun Gate is annoying!!

Dongnimmun Gate at Seodaemun Independence Park I visited Dongnimmun Gate located at Seodaemun Independence Park in Seoul. When I saw it in person, I was impressed by the magnificent appearance that contained traces of our history. Dongnimmun is a monument built in 1897 to announce that Joseon was an independent nation free from the interference of the Qing Dynasty, and is said to have been modeled after the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. When I stood in the square in front of Dongnimmun, I felt like the past and present intersected. In particular, behind Dongnimmun Gate, there is a statue of Seo Jae-pil and an information board explaining the history of the independence movement, making it a great place to look around together. There is also the Seodaemun Prison History Museum nearby, making it a place where you can feel more deeply the sacrifice and spirit of the independence movement. If you visit on a nice day, you can take even better photos, and the park itself is nice for a walk, so it was good for a light visit. Hongnanpa House and Gyeonggyojang nearby are recommended.

I visited Dongnimmun Gate, a precious cultural heritage that embodies our country’s will for independence. Unfortunately, it was under construction when I visited. It is scheduled to be completed on February 25, 2026, so it looks like it will show its great appearance again soon. I feel a sense of reverence every time I visit, as I can feel the breath of history right in the middle of the city. ​The surrounding trails are flat and well-maintained, making it the perfect place for a historical tour or outing with children. It is also connected to the Seodaemun Prison History Museum, making it a great educational course for children. There are many benches throughout the park, making it a great place to take a break, and the famous Dongnimmun Station restaurants and Yeongcheon Market are close by, making it a perfect place to enjoy a meal.

The Seodaemun Prison History Museum, Seodaemun Independence Park, and Dongnimmun Gate are connected to each other, so to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, get off at Dongnimmun Station on subway line 3 and visit. Seodaemun Prison History Hall, right next to Dongnimmun Gate, is a free facility, and the Seodaemun Prison History Museum is a paid facility. There is a fee (3,000 won). Dongnimmun Gate was built to commemorate independence during the Qing Dynasty. It is not a building against Japanese colonial rule. This is an advantage.
