Today, I am feeling the spirit of March 1st by following the footsteps of a precious place I found inside an alley in Seongbuk-dong.

This is Simwoojang, where Manhae Han Yong-un spent his last years. Monk Han Yong-un, a representative independence activist and poet represented by His Silence... I raise my palms to the monk.

It is said that this is where Manhae Han Yong-un had been staying for 10 years before he passed away. It was a quiet old house that appeared up a steep alley and hill. I thought there was a place like this left in Seoul. It was good because it was a place where you could feel the traces and breath of Han Yong-un when he was alive.

This is a space where you can feel the footsteps and breath of Master Manhae Han Yong-un. It's a great place to stop by and take in the view of Bukjeong Village.

The house is where Manhae Han Yong-un, a national representative of the March 1st Movement and a poet, lived from 1933 to 1944. Han Yong-un was a monk who tried to reform Buddhism in Joseon, an independence activist who worked hard for his country's independence, and a poet who left great achievements in modern literature. Simwoojang is a small house with a total size of only 5 rooms, with an ondol room on the left and a kitchen on the right, centered symmetrically in the middle. Behind the kitchen is Cheonmaru Room, a space for preparing meals. Entering the east-facing gate, you will find Simwoojang, a tile-roofed house facing north, a manager of a Western-style house, and a juniper tree said to have been planted by Manhae himself. In the ondol room that was Han Yong-un's study, there is a signboard that says Simwoojang, written by Wichang Oh Se-chang, a modern calligraphy artist. The name comes from a Buddhist tale that compares the process of seeking enlightenment and practicing meditation to finding a cow.

The small house where independence activist and poet Manhae Han Yong-un lived until his death after being imprisoned by Japanese colonial rule was built to face north rather than south because it was impossible to see places like the Japanese Government-General of Korea. You can take off your shoes and go inside. There is no place to park and you have to use the public parking lot. Since you have to walk anyway, public transportation is recommended. It is uphill, so comfortable clothing is required!

Sim Woojang. I came across traces of teacher Han Yong-woo in Manhae. It is a neatly organized place. Let's sit on the veranda for a moment and remember the poem "Your Silence." I want to visit again. I want to look around quietly. It's definitely worth stopping by on a fall day.

Manhae Han Yong-un's birthplace has a large yard and a quietness that can only be felt in Seongbuk-dong. When the weather is nice, it is a place where you can sit in a hanok and feel Han Yong-un's thoughts while looking at the garden with zelkova trees and pine trees that are over 100 years old. I was able to think about Han Yong-un by looking at the room and kitchen where he lived, the writings, and the picture frames. The view of Seongbuk-dong is so nice.
