YANGcheonhyanggyo

This is Yangcheonhyanggyo. It is located at 53 Yangcheon-ro 47na-gil (Gayang-dong), Gangseo-gu, Seoul. It is a 7-minute walk from Yangcheonhyanggyo Station (Line 9) Exit 2. It is Seoul Metropolitan Monument No. 8 (June 18, 1990). At the same time that the Joseon Dynasty moved the capital to Hanyang, it made Confucianism a national policy and expanded educational institutions based on Confucianism, establishing Sungkyunkwan and private schools in Hanyang. Yangcheon Hyanggyo, a local educational institution, was established in the county. It is said that Yangcheon Hyanggyo was founded in the year of King Taejong (around 1411 A.D.). It was very hot today and there was no wind. The clouds were very pretty and the manager greeted us warmly. The restroom is on the right after entering and there is a water purifier. This is Yangcheonhyanggyo again. Today is Monday, a regular holiday, so it is closed. There is a stamp tour of Yangcheonhyanggyo throughout Gangseo, but there is no paper inside. There is a sign saying that the stamp must be stamped only in the stamp book!!

I always passed by and just looked at it, but this was my first time visiting. The quiet and unique Hanok interior and colors were so pretty that I was amazed the whole time I was there. It's not big, but it's great to leisurely visit alone!

Yangcheon Hyanggyo is the only remaining Hyanggyo in Seoul. Until a few years ago, the Buddhist temples, jacaranda flowers, and pretty peonies next to the stairs blended naturally with the Hyanggyo, creating an old-fashioned atmosphere. But I don't understand why they removed all the flowers and trees. Is it because when the withered flower petals fall off, it is messy and annoying to clean? This is something that is very disappointing.

It’s a nice day and there’s a lot of fine dust! I visited Yangcheonhyanggyo. They said that because the day I was going was market day, I couldn't look inside because of construction today. When I told them I came to get a stamp, they said I could. It was small. It was right in front of my eyes, but I couldn't stop walking because I wanted to go back without seeing it. It's under construction for only one day today, but you can look around starting tomorrow! If you want to see it, go tomorrow, not today. It's a shame.

I stopped by after visiting the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum and the Gungsan Tunnel. It was nice to feel the warm atmosphere of a hanok. A hyanggyo was a local public school in the Joseon era. Because this area used to fall under Gimpo, it’s here in Seoul! It’s the only hyanggyo in Seoul. Unlike other local hyanggyo sites, which are often closed off or only enshrine the Munmyo, this one still offers educational programs today: Confucian classics, beginner Chinese, Thousand Character Classic, and more. In the second and eighth lunar months, they hold Seokjeondaeje, a ritual for Confucius, and the Daeseongjeon at the very back is opened at that time.
