소금구이 육즙이 팡팡 터져요

Gobau Jumeok Sogeum Gui — a great value old-school salt-grilled meat spot in Noryangjin. Visited on a Saturday evening with my girlfriend. It's tucked in a back alley in Noryangjin and I'd been eyeing it for a while, finally made it. Ordered sogeum gui (salt-grilled pork) and galmaegi-sal (skirt meat) with soju. When you order, the owner weighs the meat right away and cuts it into big chunks. It looks a bit fatty, but since it's grilled over charcoal, the fat renders out and the smoky flavor is incredible. Side dishes from ssam lettuce to pa-jeorim (pickled green onion) and soup — everything comes out generously. If you add rice, they give you gim and soy sauce, and it's great wrapped with meat too. At 15,000 won per serving, the value is amazing. Seeing customers steadily coming in, you can tell a 20+ year old spot like this doesn't happen by accident.

I don't usually bother writing reviews, but this place was bad enough that I'm leaving one just to remind myself never to come back. Nothing about it worked for me. The vent was dirty and grease was dripping onto the grill, the owner was unfriendly, and the kimchi already looked off — and sure enough, it tasted like a Chinese imitation. The scallion salad was also the worst I've ever had. A store-bought sauce would've been way better. And the samgyeopsal — even for a fatty cut, about 80% of it was pure fat. I'd originally planned to start with the meat and then order more along with drinks and stew, but the place was so bad that we rushed through the first two portions and headed somewhere else. I'm never going back.
