The beautiful peak called Jamdubong, which resembles the head of a silkworm because the shape of the hill leading to the Han River resembles the head of a silkworm, was changed to Jeoldusan, a cruel execution ground in 1866, when Heungseon Daewongun's great persecution of Catholics lasted for seven years... It was called a scary place called Jeoldusan, a place where the head of a Jeolja was cut off, but now it is a place with beautiful sexual art and walking trails. The Holy Land Museum is worth a visit even if you are not a Catholic~^^

Jamdubong Peak, which was a scenic spot on the Han River, was the site of the beheading of 8,000 Catholic believers during the Byeongin Persecution (1866), and that is why it came to be called Jeoldusan. I cannot even imagine how horrendous it must have been. The saying comes to mind once again, “If you kill someone with enough faith and faith to give up their life, they will die.” Wouldn't their incomprehensible martyrdom become an unquenchable flame that illuminates the world with light?

Next, I went to the Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine. It is said to be the place where many Catholics were executed during the Byeonginyangyo period. This is the first time I came across this place today while passing by. There are related artifacts in the museum, but photography is not allowed. There is explanatory material so it was easy to understand. Outside, there are statues and a statue of Father Kim Dae-geon, and the special exhibition displays a reinterpretation of the picture of Christ according to the Joseon Dynasty. Please note that it runs until February 9.

Jamdubong, dyed red, the paradox of national isolation and martyrdom ○Yanghwajin has been a key point for transportation and national defense since ancient times. Because it was the gateway to Hanyang from the West Sea, the French fleet came here during the Byeonginyangyo period and threatened Joseon. ○Daewongun believed that the invasion of the West was due to the Catholics' internal influence, and declared his will to fight by executing the Catholics at Yanghwajin. He said he would cleanse the Han River, which had been polluted by foreign powers, with the blood of church members. ○ Numerous church members were brought to Jamdubong and executed. This is the origin of the name ‘Decapitating Mountain’. The fierce will for national isolation was engraved on the Cheokhwa Monument and installed at Jamdubong Peak. The once peaceful riverside hill became a huge guillotine. ○Today, the Cheokhwabi monument testifies to closedness and stubbornness, but the skyscraper of Yeouido across the river boasts its silhouette. A space where noble faith and the lessons of history are engraved.

I was going to Dapsimni Cathedral, but went to Jeoldusan Mountain due to the Seosomun overpass construction. I also wanted to hold hands with the statue of Father Kim Dae-geon like the bishop, but instead I just saw the urn.^^ On the way down, I found out about the Mapo tour bus course and took a quick look at the 10 o'clock mass, and I also remembered Bishop Timothy Yu Gyeong-chon.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the martyrdom of Byeong-in (1866), the Martyrdom Memorial Hall was opened in October 1967. Currently, within the Jeoldusan Shrine, there is an exhibition hall of historical materials, relics and relics related to the Korean Catholic Church, a relic room containing the remains of the 28th saint, a pilgrimage cathedral, a martyr education center, and an outdoor exhibition hall. I came on business near Hapjeong Station and had some free time, so I took a look around.
When I visited in the past, I walked from Hapjeong Station, but this time I followed the trail under Dangsan Railroad Bridge and climbed the stairs leading to the parking lot. As it was not long before the 3 o'clock mass on Saturday, the parking lot was full. If you are a Catholic, you can attend the mass, but if you are not a Catholic, I recommend visiting the museum. Historical relics of the Byeongin Persecution are on display, and permanent exhibitions appear to be held periodically. A great place to meditate and take a walk. Because it is a martyrdom shrine, no disturbances or eating outside food are allowed. This place will soon be beautifully colored with fall colors...
