Quick take
- Don't plan a metro-only day — half the sights need a cheap taxi.
- The three '5·18' sites are different places — know which one you mean.
- Solo or spice-averse? Choose tteokgalbi or boribap, not hanjeongsik.
- T-money works on the metro and city buses; keep it topped up.
The route
Walk it
Follow the numbers in order and they add up to one walkable route. Confirm train and bus times once more before you set out.
Walk the downtown core first
The Asia Culture Center, the May 18 Democracy Square on top of it, Chungjang-ro and the Daein night-art market form one continuous walking loop — no transport needed. Do the heavy history here while energy is high.
Eat like it's the food capital
Even a cheap meal arrives with a wall of banchan. Tteokgalbi and barley bibimbap are the easy, no-spice picks; duck soup and hanjeongsik are the signatures but usually need two people. Save one proper meal as the day's anchor.
Use it as the Namdo gateway
Damyang bamboo (30 min), Naju gomtang and old town (40 min), Hwasun's UNESCO dolmens and Unjusa (car day), and Boseong's green-tea fields (the long one) all run out of Gwangju. Sleep here, day-trip out, come back.
The picks
Where to go, in order
Dongmyeong-dong cafe evening
After the downtown core -> Dongmyeong-dong for alley cafes, brunch spots and wine bars
Gwangju's hip cafe-and-dining neighborhood — a short walk northeast of the core, its answer to Seoul's Yeonnam-dong. A local pick over the tourist lanes; confirm current spots on the ground.
Mudeungsan nature swap
Songjeong market -> Jeungsimsa temple + lower Mudeungsan trail -> boribap lunch -> downtown Chungjang-ro evening
For nature-first visitors; the mountain replaces the afternoon rather than adding to it. Confirm current trail and temple hours.
May 18 history deep-dive
Democracy Square -> ACC archive -> taxi to May 18th National Cemetery (Buk-gu) -> return downtown
The cemetery is a 25-30 min taxi northeast and is the emotional counterpart to the downtown square. A heavier, slower day.
45 min
Arrival at the station market
1913 Songjeong Station Market
Arrive by KTX and browse the restored 1913 market right at the station instead of doubling back later.
2 hr
History anchor
Asia Culture Center & May 18 Democracy Square
Ride Metro Line 1 in from Songjeong; the culture center and the 1980 square sit on the same ground. Closed Mondays for indoor galleries.
90 min
Photogenic recovery
Yangnim-dong Penguin Village
Walk 15-20 minutes to the old missionary quarter — hanok, brick churches, murals and cafes. Lunch or coffee here to reset.
90 min
Downtown grazing
Chungjang-ro & Sangchu-twigim
Back into the walkable core for street food — sangchu-twigim (lettuce-wrapped fritters) is a Gwangju invention. All on foot.
80 min
Signature-food finish
Yudong Duck-Soup Alley
A short taxi north for Gwangju's signature perilla-thickened duck soup — best for two. On a night-market Saturday, swap for the Daein art market instead.
