Daein Market came back to life when artists took over empty stalls through the 2008 Gwangju Biennale's 'real-estate' project. By day, one-pyeong galleries and workshops mingle with old mills and dried-fish shops; on set nights, the 'Byeoljang' dokkaebi night market fills the lanes with handmade food and performances. A merchants'-association member says, “Art didn't turn the market into a tourist site — it kept the market alive.” The night market runs only on set weekends each month, so check the schedule first.
