On Chungjang-ro for decades, Gungjeon Bakery is the heritage shop whose boxes nearly every Gwangju native has carried at least once. A longtime baker says, “Keeping the bread that sells for years is harder than inventing something new.” The layered butterfly pie and the big “dinosaur-egg” bun sit in the same spot on the shelf across generations. The buttercream is still whipped fresh each morning, and around 3 p.m. warm pies come out and the line grows. “In Gwangju, bread was a gift,” he says, recalling how these boxes traveled on exam days, holidays, and first paydays. Several times a day, in front of the glass case, an adult tells a child, “This was here when I was in school too.”
