A longtime vendor says, “Yangdong is Gwangju's fridge and kitchen at once.” Before holidays the scent of fermenting skate fills the lanes; at dawn restaurant owners come to stock their banchan. The fried-chicken alley, jokbal shops, and sundae and noodle stalls sit within one block, so a walk feeds you without trying. He suggests, “Fold the map and follow your nose.” Haggling is small, but the old generosity of a little extra for regulars still lingers.
